Off-Topic Media http://www.offtopicmedia.com Tue, 18 Jun 2013 20:35:21 +0000 en-US hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.4.2 Teeth Whitening And Other Vital Tips For Improving Your Overall Appearance http://www.offtopicmedia.com/teeth-whitening-tips-improving-overall-appearance/ http://www.offtopicmedia.com/teeth-whitening-tips-improving-overall-appearance/#comments Tue, 18 Jun 2013 20:34:34 +0000 Admin http://www.offtopicmedia.com/?p=195 Continue reading ]]> If you have a pulse, there is a fantastic chance that you like to look good. Even for the less image conscious among us, if you have to choose between looking good and looking not-so-good, you probably are going to pick the former option. I mean, why not? Studies and statistics have demonstrated that we are subconsciously drawn to more attractive people in virtually every aspect of life. Whether you are trying to get a job, attract a mate, get selected for a leadership role in your social organization, or almost anything else having to do with other people, looking good is going to increase your odds of success.

Now obviously, attraction and appearance are subjective to the viewer, and there are many additional factors, such as confidence, presence, and status, that influence people’s perception of you. That being said, there are a few simple things that you can do to achieve a universal boost in your overall appearance. Take a look!

1) Whiten Your Teeth

Smiling young woman with white teethIf you’ve been brushing night and day since you were a wee lad or lassie, you can go ahead and skip to the end. For the rest of us, our inconsistent oral hygiene has landed us with some pearly off-colors where there should be pearly whites. Your smile is one of the most attractive parts of you as a human being, so you want it looking as fresh as possible.

Teeth whitening doesn’t have to be a tedious process. You can purchase products online for relatively cheap or visit your local dentist for a quick clean. Be advised that there are some pretty sketchy products out there, so do your research before purchasing and applying a teeth whitening product.

2) Change-up Your Hair Style

Your hair is probably the easiest adjustment you can make to achieve the most drastic boost in appearance. Average looking people can look amazing with the right hairstyle, and inversely, incredibly attractive people can hide quite well behind a poor one. Great hair is essential for looking great, and it doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg!

There are aspiring hair stylists everywhere – really good ones – who will give you salon quality cuts for the price of lunch at your favorite cafe. And the best part is, you can afford to survive some poor cuts on the way to finding the right stylist, because it’s hair, and it grows back!

3) Buy Clothes That Fit

Notice I didn’t say, “Buy expensive clothes.” A $1,000 dollar suit you got from your dad won’t look nearly as good on you as a $200 suit that actually fits well. This principle applies to every type of clothing, from casual to athletic to dress. Buy clothes that fit!

This rule is much more important for guys than it is for the ladies. Women have a mystical way of turning weird fits into a unique style that completely works for them. For the men, however, unless you are a fashionisto looking to rock the underground (in which case you wouldn’t be reading this), get clothes that fit as perfectly as possible. And if it doesn’t fit, don’t buy it! It’s that simple.

Follow these steps, and you will be shocked at how many compliments you receive from your friends and family. You will probably be quite surprised yourself at how much better you look when you take a gander in the mirror. You’re always going to need haircuts, so why not get the most out of them. And you’ll always need to buy clothes, so why not get ones that fit and will make you feel ten times more confident about your appearance? Everyone you talk with sees your teeth; make the investment. Now go get busy being your good looking self!

Go Ahead, Ship Me to Abu Dhabi, Garfield! http://www.offtopicmedia.com/ahead-ship-abu-dhabi-garfield/ http://www.offtopicmedia.com/ahead-ship-abu-dhabi-garfield/#comments Wed, 19 Sep 2012 14:08:12 +0000 Admin http://www.offtopicmedia.com/?p=174 Continue reading ]]> Remembering back to old Garfield comics, Odie always annoyed Garfield to no end, just by being his adorable doggy self. As a solution to his problem, Garfield always packed Odie in a small crate and sent him to the dreaded Abu Dhabi. Odie must be laughing now; Abu Dhabi has become a beautiful and successful UAE nation, and may be a great vacation spot for humans and yellow dogs with long. slobbery tongues.

Beautiful Landmarks and Blue Oceans

Abu Dhabi is a metropolis, netting a great deal of GDP for the United Arab Emirates every year due to tourism, oil and other business. Located in the Arabian Peninsula northeast in the Persian Gulf, Abu Dhabi is a beautiful tourist attraction full of interesting architecture and warm beaches outside of an arid desert.

During your scenic trip to Abu Dhabi, there are plenty of tours around and through the city that can keep you busy. Taking a tour to the capital allows tourists to view everything from the warm beaches to the skyline and everything in between. According to the Abu Dhabi travel site, tour guides will take you along the Corniche for a view of everyday life in the city. They also give you a view of iconic buildings including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Heritage Village.

Unlike many tourist attractions, Abu Dhabi offers desert safaris to give people and small dogs a unique vacation experience. Called the Rub Al Khali, the desert in Abu Dhabi is a beautiful sight to behold. Tours offer camel rides, sand skiing while watching the sunset, and riding up and down some of the biggest sand dunes in the world. Afterwards, sit down at a permanent desert camp site and dine on barbeque while smoking some shisha, if you would like. Receive your own henna tattoo, and complete your desert camping experience.

Relax and Enjoy Abu Dhabi, Odie

Whether you are a brown spotted dog or a human in need of a serious vacation, Abu Dhabi can show you a world that is unique and amazing. If you are planning a trip with your family or perhaps a honeymoon, perhaps Abu Dhabi will be the perfect vacation for you. There are a number of travel agencies like Cruise One, who can make the trip to Abu Dhabi as enjoyable as the time that you’re there.

Could Your Urine Cure Your Cancer? http://www.offtopicmedia.com/urine-cure-cancer/ http://www.offtopicmedia.com/urine-cure-cancer/#comments Wed, 05 Sep 2012 19:05:26 +0000 Admin http://www.offtopicmedia.com/?p=170 Continue reading ]]> A Controversial Trial Seeking a Cure

For generations, researchers and doctors have been searching for effective treatments for all types of cancers. Today, radiation and chemotherapy have proven to be the most effective for most cancer types; however, these treatments are not a foolproof cure and are often uncomfortable for cancer patients. New possibilities for cancer patients are on the rise, and one particular doctor believes that a healthy person’s urine might be the key.

Antineoplastons a Cure-All?

For the past 30 years, Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski has been working on a method to cure many types of cancer using healthy urine. More accurately, Dr. Burzynski retrieves antineoplastons from the urine for use in cancer patients. Antineoplastons can also be found in the bloodstream and synthesized in a lab.

According to his movie and several patient testimonials, the use of antineoplastons completely eliminates all forms of cancer for reasons unknown to the public. Many cancer patients enrolled in clinical trials with Dr. Burzynski report having no trace of cancer after treatment save for some scar tissue. For patients experiencing a remission due to this controversial treatment, results occur within 12 months of visiting Dr. Burzynski, according to his movie.

Treatment is Controversial and May Be Questionable

Dr. Burzynski’s work sounds like a miracle cure for cancer patients, yet he receives no grants for his research, according to his movie. Currently, the FDA has not approved the use of antineoplastons on cancer patients, and claims of the FDA backing Burzynski’s clinical trials are questionable at best. How is Dr. Burzynski continuing his trials on cancer patients?

Receiving antineoplaston treatment requires signing up for one of Burzynski’s many clinical trials. Because Burzynski cannot get FDA approval, and has been seen in court five times for his controversial treatment, he may require many cancer patients to pay a hefty fee of over $300,000 to be considered as of 2011.

Skeptics submit that Burzynski’s methods and trials are decidedly controversial. Some believe that one man cannot determine a cure-all for every cancer using one type of treatment. Many find it difficult to accept this ‘miracle cure’ as there are no controlled trials showing antineoplaston effectiveness published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. There are also no known peer reviews of these clinical trials anywhere else, creating skepticism in many that is not entirely unwarranted.

While research continues, there is still hope that Burzynski’s trials hold the key to a cure for all cancers despite criticism. For the moment, only time will tell.

Beer Remedies for Unwanted Guests http://www.offtopicmedia.com/beer-remedies-unwanted-guests/ http://www.offtopicmedia.com/beer-remedies-unwanted-guests/#comments Fri, 03 Aug 2012 17:44:59 +0000 Admin http://www.offtopicmedia.com/?p=157 Continue reading ]]> Some people enjoy the taste of a cold glass of beer. Others may have another drink of choice. There are a few household uses for beer that may make everyone think highly of this beverage. Beer can actually be used as an environmentally friendly alternative for eliminating insects.

Slugs and Snails

Beer can be used to trap slugs and snails. This is accomplished by putting containers of beer in the garden. The most effective time of day is in the evening to leave out the dishes. In the morning the dishes can be removed with the drowned insects.

Fruit Flies

Some people keep a compost pile in their kitchen to later use in the garden. The compost pile will likely bring fruit flies. Place a jar of beer on the counter and make a lid with tinfoil or plastic wrap. This will allow the fruit flies to get in but they will be unable to leave.

Cockroach

For some people, cockroaches are the epitome of gross and pesky insects. To get rid of pesky roaches, take a slice of bread that has been soaked in beer then place it in a jar. On the lip of the jar, place Vaseline so that the roaches cannot get out.

Bees

Where there are food and drinks outside, there are usually bees. Take a few cups or jars and fill them with beer and place them around the group or party. This will distract the bees so they will stay away from the party.

Mice

Having mice in the house can be very frustrating. This can be eliminated by taking a pail and filling it with beer. The pail only needs to be filled a small amount if you do not want the mouse to drown. A ramp will need to be placed beside the pail so the mouse can climb up to the rim. Once the mouse gets to the top it will fall in and mouse can be taken outside.

People

Not only are bugs and rodents attracted to beer, people are too. A party is not complete without some beer for the guests. The best way to please your guests and keep them happy is to give them a glass of beer. Whether you are shopping at a grocery store or a wine retail shop, they are sure to have a selection to make your party from pests and maintain happy guests.

Singapore as the Land of Immigrants http://www.offtopicmedia.com/singapore-land-immigrants/ http://www.offtopicmedia.com/singapore-land-immigrants/#comments Fri, 27 Jul 2012 16:18:45 +0000 Admin http://www.offtopicmedia.com/?p=151 Continue reading ]]> Singapore is a land of immigrants. Apart from small coastal communities, it was virtually uninhabited until the nineteenth century, when Britain turned it into a strategic naval and commercial staging post, triggering substantial immigration, particularly from China. More of a salad bowl than a melting pot; the resulting society is a model of multicultural harmony. Although the Chinese are by far the largest ethnic group, the Malays who make up just over 14 percent of the population, and the Indians who form 7 percent, contribute more to Singaporean society than their numbers would suggest.

The official languages of Singapore are therefore Malay (which is also the “national” language), Chinese (Mandarin), Tamil, and English. English is the language of administration, business, and technology.

The Chinese Immigrants

Life in China in the last days of the Qing dynasty in the nineteenth century was harsh and oppressive for many. Poverty was widespread and those in the coastal provinces did not need much invitation to leave. The first junk bound for Singapore with migrants sailed from Amoy in 1821, and by 1827 the local Malay population was vastly outnumbered. The British encouraged this immigration, as the Chinese were reckoned to be a hardy and industrious people. Many were illiterate and penniless, but once they had paid off their passage they flourished. Some came as indentured laborers to work in the tin mines of Malaya and the docks in Singapore. They became coolies, farmers, and traders.

Their numbers continued to grow, even though the Singapore government tried to impose quotas, especially during the years of the Great Depression. The administration was always anxious to maintain a balance between the sexes and so avoid the problem of prostitution that had occurred in the early years of the nineteenth century when most of the immigrants were young men. In the early years of the twentieth century there were still more men than women: something like 240 men to every 100 women.

Most Overseas Chinese, not just those of Singapore, come from the southern coastal provinces between Hong Kong and Shanghai. Some were original inhabitants of the region and others had migrated south over the centuries. Although they are all Chinese, they come from a number of different ethnic groups. They share the same written language but speak completely different dialects and have different local cultures that they value.

However, most of these ethnic groups trace their origins to four river deltas: the Min River flows into the South China Sea at Fuzhou, the Chiu-lung at Xiamen (Amoy), the Han River near Shantou (Swatow), and the Pearl River south of Guangzhou (Canton) and opposite Hong Kong.

The people from Fuzhou speak Hokchiu; those from Xiamen speak Hokkien (this is the largest ethnic group in Singapore); those from Shantou speak Hoklo (but are called Teochew); and those from the Pearl River delta and Guangzhou call themselves and speak Cantonese. In the early days this led to factionalism and clan conflicts in Singapore.

The Hakka, who speak Hakka, emigrated from Guangdong, Fujian, and Jianxi provinces, and the Hainanese from Hainan Island, the most southerly part of China that is opposite the Vietnamese coast.

In Singapore today members of the older generation still speak their native dialects, but increasing numbers of young Chinese people speak Mandarin at home.

Straits Chinese

There was, however, a group of Chinese who came to settle in Singapore who were very different from the poor, illiterate migrants. They were the Straits Chinese, or Chinese who had adopted Malay customs. They were descendants of the old Chinese families of sixteenth-century Malacca and Penang. Over the centuries the Straits Chinese were influenced by their Malay neighbors, and some even felt more comfortable speaking Malay. The women adopted Malay-style dress and were referred to as Nonya. Their cuisine was transformed by typical Malay ingredients such as fragrant roots, herbs, chilies, and, above all, coconut milk. They combined the traditional love of pork – forbidden, of course, to Malay Muslims – with classic Malay ingredients.

The Straits Chinese were educated, had money, and soon found themselves an indispensable part of the colonial administration. Some became doctors, lawyers, and teachers, while others established successful businesses, especially in the timber and rubber trades. The men, referred to as the Baba community, were often ridiculed for being “more British than the British.” Their newspapers were in English rather than Chinese, and they adopted the manners of their colonial masters, playing billiards and drinking brandy. Although they did not mix socially with the new Chinese immigrants, they kept abreast of developments on the mainland, especially those to do with the reform of Imperial China’s archaic system of government, conducted by corrupt bureaucrats from northern China. So it comes as no surprise to learn that it was a Straits Chinese, Teo Eng Hock, who offered his large villa to Sun Yat Sen, the future first President of China, when he sought refuge in Singapore. You can visit his villa today and view its vast collection of artifacts and photographs, for the Singapore government restored the villa in 1964 to commemorate Sun Yat Sen and his revolutionary nationalist movement.

The Malay Community

The original Malay inhabitants of the island were soon outnumbered by the thousands of Chinese immigrants looking for a better way of life. It is a testament to the strength of their community that not only did it survive intact, but in many ways it influenced the newcomers. Malay is the national language of Singapore, and one of the four official languages. (English, however, is the language of administration.)

The Malays are a gentle, courteous people, always generous and hospitable. Indeed, together with the promotion of social harmony, these are core Malay values. They have a strong belief in community, no doubt growing out of the traditional kampong (small village) way of life.

Although the kampongs have been replaced by the ethnically diverse Housing Development Blocks, their values still prevail.

The Malays have become self-reliant and have prospered in the new Singapore, owning apartments and holding down good jobs. They do not believe in the pursuit of wealth for its own sake, but in the greater importance of the spiritual side of life. This is reflected in their concern not only for their families but for their neighbors as well.

The Malays want visitors to enjoy Singapore and their particular Malay culture. However, there are still a few “dos and don’ts” that visitors should be aware of, which in turn will make them feel comfortable and not worry about upsetting or embarrassing their hosts.

The Indian Community

Despite making up just over 7 percent of the population, Indians have always been prominent in politics and the law, possibly because they are passionate public speakers who love an argument. They are also well represented in the other professions, commerce, and industry.

To get an understanding of the Indian community it is a good idea to visit “Little India” on Serangoon Road. Some of the shops now have Chinese owners but still sell the traditional colorful wares that their customers demand. Indeed, most Indians still shop there, especially when buying saris, men’s dhotis, betel nuts, heavy brass stands, garlands for weddings, arm bangles, and other indispensable items for an Indian household.

Like the Chinese, Indian shopkeepers appreciate a customer who will haggle and who relishes the prospect of a bargain. Again, as with the Chinese, the Indians regard it as a good omen if the first customer of the day buys something, however small, and especially if that purchase includes flowers, sugar, or sweets, but not oil. The latter is regarded as not a good sign for the rest of the day’s trading.

2012 Airport Traveler Tips http://www.offtopicmedia.com/2012-airport-traveler-tips/ http://www.offtopicmedia.com/2012-airport-traveler-tips/#comments Wed, 18 Jul 2012 23:06:48 +0000 Admin http://www.offtopicmedia.com/?p=143 Continue reading ]]> A lot has changed in air travel safety regulations since 2011. In recent years, many new security measures have been put into place in airports across the United States and the world. Because of this, there are several tips that travelers should follow in order for their airport experience to be easy, efficient, and comfortable.

Security lines at Denver International Airport

Dress For Easy Screening

Though there is no dress code for going through airport security, there are certain items of clothing that you can avoid in order to make the screening process go by more quickly and easily. Because every passenger, regardless of age, must be screened before gaining access to an airport’s gates, there are a variety of clothing items and accessories that can slow down this process. Avoid wearing a lot of metal jewelry. This jewelry must be removed and placed in plastic bins before a passenger can go through the metal detector prior to entering the secure side of the airport. Because of this, it’s best to pack your jewelry to wear once you arrive at your destination and not wear it to the airport. Avoid large, bulky overcoats, as these items must be removed before you pass through the security scanners. Also, since travelers must remove their shoes before going through safety detectors, slip-on styles that are easy to put on and remove are best. Avoid shoes that require lots of laces or Velcro to save time during the screening process.

Pack Your Liquids Correctly

Liquids that are in carry-on luggage must be 3-ounces or less and each passenger is limited to one, quart-size plastic baggy of these liquids. Because of these regulations, it is best to pack larger bottles of liquids such as hair gels, face wash, and perfumes, in your check bag and carry on just the items that are 3-ounces or smaller. If you are going on a short trip and need only a small amount of liquid products, consider purchasing 3-ounce containers at a drug store, pouring your products into them, and labeling them. Always make sure to remove your plastic baggy of liquids from your carry-on bag and have it in plain sight as you move through the security checkpoint.

Have necessary Items Out

Make sure to have your photo identification and boarding pass out of your wallet or purse and in your hand before you move through the security line. Many people can unintentionally hold up the line for other passengers by forgetting to have these items available and needing to rummage through their luggage to find them.

Remove Your Laptop

If you are traveling with a laptop, be sure to remove it from your carry-on bag to place separately on the security conveyer belt. Keeping your laptop at the top of your carry-on so that it is easy to remove and put back inside is a good way to minimize the time needed to remove it from your bag when you pass through security.

Take Out Any Body Jewelry

Remove any metal body piercings during your travel day so you don’t have to remove them in the security line. If you have a pacemaker or other metal device that cannot be removed, be sure to inform the TSA agent before passing through the metal detector. Often, TSA agents can do a manual check so that you do not have to walk through the scanner.

The Quintessential Chicago Trip: Prepare For the Culture of the Midwest http://www.offtopicmedia.com/quintessential-chicago-trip-prepare-culture-midwest/ http://www.offtopicmedia.com/quintessential-chicago-trip-prepare-culture-midwest/#comments Fri, 15 Jun 2012 17:17:29 +0000 Laub http://www.offtopicmedia.com/?p=133 Continue reading ]]> I am a Chicagoan to the core, from my accent and temper right down to my favorite pro football team. Unfortunately, I can’t always afford to travel back to my hometown as much as I’d like; however, I’m always eager to make recommendations to vacationers who are thinking about visiting the Windy City.

If you are fortunate enough to visit Chicago, you can expect great food, beautiful sights and a great atmosphere that will keep you coming back for more! The typical trip to Chicago is anything but. While there are many places tourists frequent, including Wrigley Field and Lake Michigan; people often miss the hundreds of gems that make the city so amazing. If you have never been, grab a Chicago dog and experience the atmosphere that only Chicago can provide.

Something in This City Changes People

The Windy City means something different for everyone. When I get nostalgic about my hometown, I think about blues and jazz. As Chicago was once a central hub for Vaudeville, it is now host to plenty of broadway, theater, dance and music venues suited toward most people. If you are a fan of the arts, be sure to check out the Harris Theater for Music and Dance and the House of Blues to curb your music appetite. Want comedy? The Second City is a great place to check out some cheeky improv.

Day or night, there is always something to do and see during your visit to Chicago, depending on your interests. Chicago is home to various art and science museums, including Adler Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium; some of which are free to the public depending on the time of day. Be sure to plan accordingly if you would like to save some money. If you are more interested in sculptures, make some time to check out “the bean” at the AT&T Plaza in Millennium Park (also known as Cloud Gate).

Understandably, plenty of tourists are interested in visiting the lake. If this sounds like you, head on down to the Navy Pier, a true tourist’s dream. The Pier hosts everything you can think of, from a 15-story ferris wheel to restaurants, exhibitions to entertainment, and even a Children’s Museum for the youngsters. Take a few hours to shop and settle in for an IMAX movie, take a dining cruise with your girlfriend, or check out the latest concert. The sky’s the limit, literally! With a nightly fireworks show to wrap up your night, this is one tourist spot everyone should experience at least once.

There are many sights to see on your trip to the windy city – perhaps more than you may have time to see. As long as you take time to check out some sights, and eat a few true Chicago dogs with a pop or a tasty slice of cheesy Chicago pizza with a hearty beer, your trip will certainly be one to remember.

Stranded: What to Do if You Are Stuck in the Middle of Nowhere http://www.offtopicmedia.com/what-to-do-when-stranded-stuck/ http://www.offtopicmedia.com/what-to-do-when-stranded-stuck/#comments Wed, 13 Jun 2012 18:31:27 +0000 Laub http://www.offtopicmedia.com/?p=128 Continue reading ]]> While the likelihood of becoming stranded that way might be far fetched for many, it is not unheard of. Keeping your cool and following some basic survival tips could keep you alive and healthy until you find rescue.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

The first and most important thing to remember while surviving in the wilderness is to stay calm and think rationally. While this may seem out of the question, panicking will not get you anywhere. Take stock of your surroundings during these first moments and rely on your senses. Ask yourself whether you smell food or smoke, whether you can hear running water, or whether you see any unusual light around you. These signs can help you determine whether there are any people or food sources nearby.

If you became stranded because of a vehicle malfunction, search your car for any food, water bottles, and tools that you may have stashed. Food and water should be rationed until a new source is found, and tools could prove helpful with hunting and removing parts of the car, such as the tires.

The rubber from your tires is extremely flammable. Removing them from your car and lighting them on fire with any type of spark can send thick black smoke into the sky, signalling where you are. Remember to let the air out of your tires before you light them; setting a tire aflame while it is aired up can cause an explosion that could prove fatal.

No food or water in your car? Though it might sound absolutely disgusting, any bugs you might find can be an excellent source of protein to get you through the hours until rescue. If you have a heavy object in the car, such as a tire iron or your car battery, you may be able to find yourself an animal to eat. If your search for water comes up empty as well, it is possible to drink your own urine. Though it probably tastes terrible, urine is a sterile water source that will keep you hydrated until someone finds you. Be sure not to keep urine in a water bottle for too long, as bacteria can fester quickly and make you sick.

Surviving in the middle of nowhere is not a fun way to spend your day; however, if you follow these simple steps and stay calm, you will live to see another day.
