Everyone has wanted to eat out of the toilet, right? Okay, probably not, but a toilet-themed restaurant in Taiwan says otherwise with its massive poo-related menu, toilet and shower decor – not to mention its restaurant mascot: a happy pink swirl of poo.
Named the Modern Toilet, this restaurant may sound unappetizing; however, locals and foreigners alike flock to the three-story “bathroom” looking for delicious chicken curry, heaping loads of chocolate swirl ice cream and more.
Why Eat From the Toilet? Then Again, Why Not?
You might wonder who would come up with this “crappy” idea for a restaurant. That person is Eric Wang, former banker turned young entrepreneur. He was inspired by a comic book featuring tons of toilet humor, and began a small business selling ice cream in toilet shaped cones from street booths.
Instead of being grossed out by the sight of chocolate ice cream shaped like poo sitting in a small toilet, people were fascinated and the business took off, allowing Wang to begin larger toilet businesses all over Taiwan. He expanded the menu to include more than just ice creams, and Modern Toilet was born.
The extremely popular Modern Toilet features complete bathroom-related decorations from shower heads and urinals hanging on the walls to light bulbs made to look like swirls of poo. There are toilets all over the eating area placed for your sitting pleasure; bathtubs for tables; and bed pans used for bowls.
It has been said that eating at the Modern Toilet is a true stomach test. The restaurant’s most popular dish, the chicken curry, is the food item that is closest in appearance to a huge dump in the toilet, but it is apparently the tastiest item on the menu.
The Modern Toilet is certainly the most interesting restaurant I have ever heard of, and it makes me look at the old porcelain throne in a whole new light.
